How Was Training?

4) How was training? Do you feel like Blue Engine prepared you for the academic year?

Training is short and sweet, filled with all of the essentials you need to know from the content side of things. You definitely have to figure some things out on the fly once you start working in your specific school environment–since every school is different–but the majority of things you will feel prepared for. Behavior management is definitely one of the major things you come to learn most through experience, but that’s okay! Your BETA team is there to support you, as well as your lead teachers and your school administration.

Training was excellent! They definitely “threw” us into teaching summer school, which was nerve racking, but definitely the best thing. I loved having the chance to actually try out techniques I learned the day before. I also really appreciated the immediate feedback on my teaching style. I don’t think anything can prepare you for everything you will encounter your first year teaching, but I do think Blue Engine prepared me as much as possible. I walked into the first day of school nervous but confident. And the best part of training is that it never ends. Unlike some of my friends in other teaching programs, I don’t feel like Blue Engine has abandoned me in the classroom. Between my TC and my SD (Teaching Coordinator and Site Director), I know I have someone I can turn to with any problem.

Training made adjusting to the schedule of a teacher, meaning waking up extremely early and having to be “on” all day with the students, a much easier adjustment. We learned applicable behavior management techniques, as well lesson planning tips, that we were able to immediately put into practice during the summer school classes we taught starting on day 2 of training. A lot of what I have learned this year has just come from experience, but training gave me a great knowledge-base to start from at the beginning of the school year. I still refer back to numerous handouts we received during training when reflecting on the effect of my teaching practices.

Training was a positive experience for me. It was cool to get to work with some of the summer school students, and try out the things we were learning in a classroom setting with actual students. The role-plays we did in teams were also useful, as it simulated a classroom environment but gave us the security of being able to have a trial run before using the techniques with students. Overall I felt like Blue Engine did a great job preparing us for the academic year, and in any instances that something we don’t feel prepared to handle our site director is always just an email or phone call away to help answer our questions.

I really enjoyed training. It was the perfect amount of time to get to know everyone on the Blue Engine team and to prepare for the year ahead. We were basically thrown in front of a group of summer school students at the start and just left to do our own thing. It was a good way to learn fast and to get to grips with small-group tutoring. I definitely learned more than my students did during summer school. I still see some of them around, as most attend a different school in the same building, and it is always great to see them and realize how much I have changed since I was teaching them in August.

After summer school we spent the majority of our time as a whole group or in subject/school teams learning how to be effective teachers. Training definitely helped to prepare me for the academic year and the on-going support we get helps a lot too. Outside of the formal training we did a lot of team bonding activities such as bowling and going out for meals, they were a lot of fun.

Training was a great experience, not only because it prepared me to work with students but also because it created a tight-knit community among all of the BETAs. The training stood out from other trainings I’ve been through in the past in that we were put into situations that we would actually face during the school year. We went through many simulations, where other BETAs pretended to be students with various behavior or comprehension problems, forcing us to practice responding and thinking on our feet. This was incredibly nerve-wracking for me at first, but by putting me in those positions, it gave me very valuable practice and a much thicker skin. I have now experienced almost every bizarre situation from those simulations in the actual classroom.

Training was really helpful because we did a lot of role-playing scenarios to practice the skills we learned. We also learned a good amount of educational theory and had discussions about diversity issues related to education that prepared me pedagogically for what I would do. Of course, you can only truly learn by doing, but I felt pretty confident going into the school year that I was ready. It was also just a huge time for bonding with other BETAs that helped me transition into the school environment feeling more comfortable with my coworkers.

Training was great. Breakfast and lunch were provided, so it made the transition/move-in period very easy since I didn’t have to worry as much about feeding myself. The content in the training is very useful and set me up very well to understand exactly what I needed to work on to be effective. This time is also very important to get to know your school and content teams, so that by the time school starts up, you are already really good friends with every BETA you will be working with.

Training was overwhelming but very helpful. I think it prepared me for working with my students and learning how to plan and differentiate. I wish it would have helped more in how to deal with the resistance that sometimes comes with the lead teachers.

Training was a combination of preparing for work in the classroom and getting to know my fellow BETA’s. The first half entailed a few hours working with students and the rest was time with our Math Site Director learning practical classroom skills. After summer school finished, training was only with fellow BETA’s going through role play, reflection and practical skills workshops. Of course, the free lunch and breakfast during this time was also a nice perk. Training was helpful, and I think I still dwell on a lot of the points brought up during that time even now. It’s certainly hard to draw a direct connection between something taught to you in a classroom and actually applying those methods with students, but it’s a helpful starting off point. I think the bonds created between BETA’s during that month was also really important for future working relationships.

Training was great! Knowing the psychology behind teaching was very helpful in classroom management and creating investment strategies for the kids. Also, the constant practice in execution was really helpful with presenting material to kids. Unfortunately, every classroom is different and so it is difficult to prepare someone for their specific class, subject material, lead teacher, and students; but, Blue Engine did help prepare me to adjust to the many different circumstances I have confronted.
